Hike for Hospice raises over $131,000.

On an otherwise gloomy day…the sun burst out of the sky as the pipes started to play and they were off on the 9th Annual Hike for Innisfree House and Lisaard House on Sunday June 4th.  Strolling through the beautiful grounds of Doon Heritage Village dodging the puddles created by the earlier down pour that did not deter these hikers from participating in honour of a loved one.  “We couldn’t be more thrilled to have surpassed our $80,000 goal this year to reach in excess of $131,000”,  claimed Margot Vanderlaan, Development Manager.

Among those introduced to the crowd, Catherine Fife, MPP Kitchener-Waterloo, Councillors, Brian Bourke and Yvonne Fernandes and Kim Robinson Executive Director of Innisfree House and Lisaard House.

The hike is the only fundraiser organized by the hospice. The rest of the facility's operating expenses - between $1.5 million and $2 million a year - come from corporate contributions, personal donations and memorial donations.

Only a portion of nursing care at the hospice is offset by government funding. Utility costs, medical equipment, furnishings, food and other expenses are all covered through community funding.

The Hike website will remain open until June 30th.

Lisaard House and Innisfree House are Waterloo regions only residential hospices providing palliative care to residents while supporting their family through the end-of-life journey at no cost.

The hospices do not hasten or slow the dying process but believe that death is a normal part of life.  Lisaard House and Innisfree House strive to “Make Moments Matter” for residents by providing a beautiful home-like setting where they can be surrounded by loved ones, free from pain and live in peace during their journey.

No member of the community they serve knows when they, or a loved one may need these services, the ongoing sustainability is paramount.
